This has been raising the eyebrows of every citizen of Nigeria towards the government, but recent analysis as gathered in one of the major states in the west proves that about 40% of the total beggars in the streets of Nigeria are immigrants - possibly from the nearby countries.
Though, its been a long time saying "Nigeria - The giant of Africa". Not just by population anyway, but as well as in generosity in diversity.
Following some notable incidents of recent, it was a shameful thing to be convinced of the "professionalization of begging". This raises this fear in me 'if' beggars will ever be off our streets.
Though its obvious that some beg for reasons that may seem understandable which includes:
- Natural disaster - war (for refugees)
- Sometimes unpredictable occurrences like Shortage of transport fare, roadside robbery, or accidental lose of money - and the likes.
But in most cases, some practice begging as a profession on day-to-day basis.
Recently, the Lagos state government made it a mandate to eradicate beggars off the street. But sooner than ever can be imagined, they took over - almost every place with a rapidly increased population - causing nuisance to the society.
On a random interview to residence of Ikotun - Lagos, revealed that "some of this professional beggars have luxurious living like:
- Owning up totwo2 or more vehicles on transportation business,
- Training their children in expensive institutions,
- Being Land Lords of several duplexes in notable cities,
- Having up to two or more wives, etc.
ALL THESE CAN BE HISTORY "only if" the assigned government agencies will stick to their various duties with fear of no favor and having a good platform to sensitize the citizens the importance of self respect and hard work.
